Faisal Hassan beat Alex Roscoe 3-2 to win the Zimbabwe Closed Junior Squash Championships in a tournament played at the Suburbs Squash Courts in Bulawayo yesterday.

Hassan started off on a good note winning the first two sets 11-7 and 11-5 before Roscoe got the better of him in the third 11-3, 11-5. Hassan powered through the fifth and final set 11-7 to clinch the championship.

“I had a gradual performance when I started, but I performed better towards the end. The competition was good as well as the facilities. I am very happy that I won it,” Hassan said.

In the Under-19 girls category Yvonne Mubure of Harare beat Lauren Williams of Bulawayo 11-6, 11-6 and 13-11.

Bryn Turk of Harare emerged as the best in the Under-16 boys category when he beat fellow Takunda Maswi 3-2.

Turk got 11-9, 5-11, 8-11, 11-6 before he won 11-4. The Under- 16 girls’ section was dominated by Girls College students.

Claire Dixon was the winner after she beat schoolmate Jade Pikney 3-2. Dixon won the contest after getting 11-8, 11-13, 5-11, 15- 13 and 11-2.

Bongiwe Mkhwananzi joined her schoolmates coming out in position three.

Joss Mama was the winner of the boys Under-14 final when he beat Justin Kersten from Bulawayo 3-0. Mama got 11-9, 11-6 and 11-3.

Kyle Tenkrooden of Harare was triumphed in the Under-13 boys section beating Anesu Mlambo also from the capital 3-1.

From the first set Tenkrooden made known his intentions when he took the first game 11-4 and went on to win 11-6 but faltered in the third set 7-11 only to rediscover his footing to clinch the final set 11-7.

Danai Jongwe of Harare won the Under-13 girls’ section while Declan Ralph also from the capital came out as the top player in the Under-11 boys’ section.

Polite Mabure was the winner of the Under-11 girls’ category while Carly Barton won the Under-14 girls’ section.
