The country’s top long-distance runners will converge in Kwekwe on Saturday for the inter-provincial cross-country championships which will open the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) 2012 calendar.

NAAZ president Joseph Mungwari said the championships, which are the country’s premier cross-country race, would be the first event on the local athletics calendar.

“The cross-country championships are on this weekend in Redcliff at Allan Lowry Golf Course. We are expecting a high turnout from both senior and junior athletes from all corners of the country as this is the first major event on the NAAZ calendar,” said Mungwari.

The veteran administrator said the Redcliff meet would help in the selection of a team to represent the country at the Southern Region Cross-Country Championships in Mauritius on March 3.

Athletes who impress in Mauritius will then represent the country at the 2nd African Cross-Country Championships set for Cape Town, South Africa, on March 18.
