MALABO Favourites Ivory Coast topped Group B after beating Angola 2-0 while Sudans first win assured them of a quarterfinal tie against Zambia in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) last group matches played last night.
Sudan won 2-1 against Burkina Faso to finish on four points-the same as Angola, but on a better goal difference as they scored four like the Southern African team, but conceded the same number while Angola let in one more.
Sudan managed to seal their first Afcon win in 42 years as they struck two past Burkina Faso thanks to a brace from Mudather Al Tahir, while a stoppage time goal from Issiaka Ouedraogo was merely a consolation.
Ivory Coast, with three wins in three matches will now face co-hosts Equatorial Guinea in the last eight on Saturday. Emmanuel Eboue and Wilfried Bony scored for the Elephants. Sudan will take on Zambia on the same day.
During the action Bahaa Eldin Abdallah took a stud near to his temple and was forced into being taken off in the sixth minute of the game, to be replaced by Musaab Omer.
Celebrations broke out in the Sudanese capital Khartoum last night with reports that dozens of local fans were already out on the streets mainly in their cars as they drove up and down the streets, honking their horns and waving the national flag.
