The body of man who reportedly drowned in Sebakwe River last Saturday was found lying on the riverbed with his head and arm missing the following day.

The remains of Tawanda Musikavanhu (22) will now be buried in Mhondoro after his body was discovered near Mupani Park on the outskirts of Kwekwe on Sunday.

On the fateful day Musikavanhu was coming from across the river with his girlfriend.

Relatives told NewsDay they suspected Musikavanhu could have been murdered before being thrown into the crocodile-infested Sebakwe River.

According to a post-mortem report from Kwekwe General Hospital, Musikavanhu died of asphyxia caused by drowning although there is no mention of how he lost his head and arm.

“This is a very tragic chapter for our family. It will remain open until we get a conclusive report from the police.

“We have failed to get any assistance even as we searched for our relative when he went missing,” said Bernard Siziba, the family spokesman.

NewsDay saw the remains of the deceased whose missing body parts appeared to have been hacked off by a hacksaw.

“We suspect it to be a ritual killing,” Siziba said. “Those who killed him must have thrown his body in the river to crocodiles, yet the police seem to have relegated this to a sudden-death matter.”

Police officers at Mupani Park told NewsDay they did not suspect any foul play and were convinced after the post-mortem that the deceased was a victim of a crocodile attack.

Midlands police provincial police spokesperson Inspector Patrick Chademana refused to comment saying he did not speak to the private media.
