The Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) has petitioned council demanding an explanation for the local authoritys poor service delivery and corruption.

In the petition dated January 20 and addressed to the town clerk Daniel Matawu, GRRA demanded the issues be addressed urgently.

As GRRA we are concerned and want to know why the mayor (Tedius Chimombe) has been twice involved in car accidents driving himself, something that is not supposed to be done according to the Urban Councils Act.

Who paid for the damages? If it is council, as Gweru residents we demand that the mayor refunds the council, the petition reads.

We want to know when Mkoba 19 is going to get water beacause it is now more than two years without a drop from the taps.

We want to know why the deputy ceremonial mayor was accorded the opportunity to buy a stand in Zim dollars in 2011.

The petition has been copied to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, Midlands governor Jason Machaya, the Local Government, Urban and Rural Development ministry and the Anti-Corruption Commission.

Last Friday, a demonstration organised by GRRA to protest poor service delivery and corruption turned political after MDC-T youths hijacked it and started chanting anti-Zanu PF slogans and praising the city fathers.

Matawu could not be reached for comment yesterday as he was said to be attending a meeting.
