KAMPALA Uganda forecasts its January coffee exports will rise 7% compared with the same year-ago period due to favourable weather, a source at the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) said yesterday.
Ranked as one of Africas leading exporters of the beans, the east African producer mainly cultivates the robusta variety, with earnings from the crop constituting a major source of foreign currency.
The source said Uganda was likely to ship 230 000 60kg bags this month compared to 215 180 bags shipped in the same period a year ago.
December and January have had fairly dry conditions and that has helped quicken ripening and drying processes of the beans, especially in the eastern and central regions where the major harvest is underway, the source said.
The two regions account for more than half of all Ugandas annual coffee exports.
UCDA forecasts Uganda will export 3 million bags of coffee in the 2011/12 season, down from 3,15 million bags shipped in 2010/2011 (Oct-Sept).
