Tragedy hit Caledonia resettlement area just outside Harare on Sunday morning when a child drowned in an unprotected well.

The victim was identified as Cephas Charamba (2).

Another child resident saw the body floating and alerted the mother, who was reportedly frantically looking for him.

An eldery woman, Anna Karonga, who identified herself as an aunt of the child, said the boy went out to play and no one noticed when he fell into the well.

“The child went outside as usual and how he got near the well no one knows, until a child who was passing by discovered the body and raised alarm.”

In the meantime, the mother was looking for Cephas everywhere until she heard the other child’s alarm.

Police at Mabvuku were alerted and came to the scene, said Karonga.

When NewsDay visited the home yesterday, people were grieving the drowning of the child in the eight-metre-deep well.

The mother was shaken and could not speak. Burial arrangements were, by yesterday, yet to be made.

Unprotected wells are littered all over Caledonia as there is no tap water in the settlement area.
