Dumiso Dabengwa is most likely to remain Zapu’s presidential candidate while the party has resolved to field candidates in all available seats in the forthcoming general elections.

The party’s southern region spokesperson Methuseli Moyo yesterday said his party was geared for elections regardless of whether or not the country had adopted a new constitution.

“We have a lot of candidates in every constituency who are willing to stand for any elected positions,” Moyo said.

“For example, in Bulawayo alone we have 200 branches, not to speak of general card-carrying members.

“This means in every post put up for grabs we will have a candidate.”

He said as for the presidential candidate, the current president of the party, Dabengwa, was set to battle it out with other presidential aspirants unless he opted out or the new constitution demanded for candidates to be below the age of 60.

“We want to win or lose free and fair elections.

“We do not believe in the holding of elections just because it is the time to, but we believe in elections which would enable people to make informed choices,” Moyo said.

Parties in the Global Political Agreement are still bickering over the holding of elections with the two MDC formations demanding polls be held under a new constitution.

President Robert Mugabe is on record saying elections would be held this year with or without the new governance charter.
