South Africa’s Under-19 cricket team skipper Quinton de Kock cracked an unbeaten ton which propelled his side to a crushing nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the opening match of the Tri-Nation Under-19 tournament at Northerns-Goodwood Cricket Club Oval in Cape Town yesterday.

De Kock blasted a quick-fire 123 off just 106 deliveries while Gihahn Cloete chipped in with an unbeaten half century as South Africa reached 202 for one wicket in 32,4 overs in reply to Zimbabwe’s 197 for in their allotted 50 overs.

Zimbabwe, who won the toss and elected to bat first, never got going and had their tail enders to thank for giving the total some respectability, as they looked down and out at one stage after slumping to 73 for six inside 23 overs.

All-rounder Ryan Burl rescued the innings with a crucial knock of 59 which steered Zimbabwe to a respectable but easily gettable 197.

The local youngsters will have to get yesterday’s defeat quickly behind them as they return to the field for yet another tough encounter against Pakistan at Somerset College today.

Meanwhile, Mashonaland Eagles toppled Matabeleland Tuskers at the top of the standings after a seven-wicket victory over Mountaineers on the third day of their Castle Logan Cup encounter at Harare Sports Club yesterday.

Mountaineers, who had posted 219 runs in their first innings compared to Eagles’ 238, were bundled out for a measly 55 runs yesterday with seamers Kyle Jarvis and Tatenda Gumunyu-Manatsa sharing seven wickets.

This gave Eagles an easily gettable target of 39 runs which they easily reached in 8,5 overs in their second innings.

The match also witnessed a magnificent century from all-rounder Elton Chigumbura, who, crucially for Zimbabwe, has found form at the right time as they prepare for their tour of New Zealand.
