Zanu PF Mount Darwin East MP, Betty Chikava has died. She was 69.

Chikava was this week admitted at Shashe Hospital in Bindura after suffering a diabetic attack, but succumbed to the disease yesterday morning.

A trained nurse and midwife, Chikava started her political career in 1963 when she and her husband, Thompson, supported freedom fighters with material resources and shelter.

During the years 1976-1979, Chikava was arrested on several occasions for supporting the armed struggle.

Chikava first made it to Parliament in 2005 when she became Senator for Bindura-Shamva. She won the Mount Darwin East seat during the 2008 elections. By the time of going to print burial arrangements had not yet been confirmed.
