Five years for attempted rape

A 28-year-old Penhalonga man was jailed for five years for attempted rape after waylaying a woman coming from church last year.

Brian Ferendende was convicted on his own plea by magistrate Fabian Feshete on a charge of attempted rape.

He was sentenced to five years behind bars.
One year was suspended on condition he would not be convicted of a similar offence in the next five years.

Charges against Ferendende are that sometime in March last year he waylaid a 43-year-old woman on a Sunday afternoon.

He approached the woman pretending to ask for something, in a bid to get close to her. He then threw her to the ground where the two wrestled as Ferendende tried to rape her.

The court heard the old woman screamed for help from passers-by thwarting Ferendende’s intent.
Jane-Rose Matsikidze prosecuted.
