MDC-T Harare province says it is not amused by Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo’s continued attack on its councillors whose efforts they say were being frustrated the minister for political reasons.

Chombo last week described MDC-T councillors in Harare as “dull and incompetent”, much to the chagrin of the Morgan Tsvangirai-led party.

Spokesperson for the province, deputy Justice minister, Obert Gutu, said Chombo was throwing spanners into the works of the councillors by continuously frustrating them through his interference.

“As MDC-T Harare province, we take great exception to Chombo’s misguided attacks on our councillors.

He described MDC-T councillors in Harare as dull and incompetent yet, if anything, it is Chombo himself who has gone out of his way to frustrate the good work that the Mayor and his councillors have been doing to bring sanity back to the former sunshine city,” Gutu said.

Gutu said an example was Chombo and Zanu PF’s connivance to block the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation project aimed at constructing low-income houses in Mbare.

“Chombo has been an agent of destabilisation within the city and his record of failure in running the Ministry of Local Government is legendary. As such, Chombo has absolutely no basis to insult and ridicule MDC-T councillors in Harare.”

Chombo last week told NewsDay: “I get surprised with the choice of councillors by the MDC-T. If you were to compare the councillors I appointed and the MDC-T councillors, my goodness, they are not even comparable. There is no comparison at all, it’s like they are square pegs in a round hole.”
