Ronzai Saurombe and Mufaro Mukome were crowned the 2012 Super Eight and New Winners tennis champions, as the curtain came down on the opening junior tennis tournaments of the year yesterday.

Saurombe won the boys’ Under-18 Super Eight final after beating Taremeredzwa Mariga 6-1, 6-2 while Mukome dismissed Takudzwa Tsapayi 6-0, 6-7 (6), 6-0 to clinch his maiden New Winners’ title.

The two tournaments were being used by Tennis Zimbabwe to prepare Zimbabwe’s junior tennis team which left the country yesterday for the African Junior Championships Zone VI qualifiers which serve off in Windhoek, Namibia, on Sunday.

Alywn Mushonga won the Super Eight title in the boys’ Under-16 category which was played using a round-robin format after winning all his five matches while Tonderai Tapfuma beat Mzingaye Sibanda 6-2, 7-6 (1) in the New Winners final.

In the girls’ Under-16 Super Eight final Tariro Dembo upstaged favourite Latifah Yasini after a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

In the girls’ Under-14 category, Amanda Mungami won the New Winners title with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Rennator Zulu while Keren Machisa beat Karen Muswere 6-2, 6-1 to finish unbeaten in the Super Eight tournament.

Julius and Bongani Mtetwa dominated both tournaments in the boy’s Under-14 category with the latter winning the Super Eight while the former dominated the Super Eight.

Takudzwa Garwe beat Faith Nawari 6-1, 6-2 in the girls Under-12 New Winners final while Beverly Matsiwe warmed up for the zonal qualifiers with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win over Munashe Kaome in the Super Eight final.
