LUANDA — Angola coach Lito Vidigal has named a preliminary squad of 26 for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), calling up a number of new faces.

Vidigal has named newcomers Jaime, Bastos and Manucho Barros in his squad for the competition, which sees the Angolans in Group B along with Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Sudan.

Jaime, who plays for Progresso Luanda club, and Bastos (Petro Atletico) are both central defenders, while Manucho Barros from InterClube is a striker.

The coach will cut three teams from the roster ahead of the tournament, which gets under way on January 21, suggesting that the players who ply their trade outside of Angola are most at risk.

Brazil-based Geraldo has not been included in the squad, with Vidigal suggesting his failure to honour previous call-ups had counted against him.

“The most important is to speak of those summoned, but Geraldo is an athlete with quality and has much to do for the national team if he so wished.

“I summoned him several times, but he failed to turn up without justification,” the coach said. Meanwhile, Angola will play Nigeria in Lagos in a friendly international on January 12.
