Ndebele seeks dancers

Popular dancer and singer Sandra Ndebele is planning to recruit more dancers for her all-female group, Intombi Zomqangala.

In an interview, Ndebele told NewsDay the recruitment drive kicked off yesterday at Amakhosi Cultural Centre.

She said the move was meant to empower the girl child.

“I would want to take in as many talented young female dancers and singers as possible. Even those who are good at acting should come,” she said. “This is part of my efforts to empower women.”

Ndebele said giving young women an opportunity to be part of her group, which regularly tours Europe and the African continent, would “help them find something constructive to do and also expose their talent.”

She currently has 12 female dancers in her troupe.

She said she would like to see this number grow considerably. She said she would also be around to coach the newcomers.

Ndebele is a crowd favourite when she performs mainly due to her energetic dance routines.

She said expanding her group was also a move meant to grow the arts industry in Bulawayo.

“If you look at what is happening in Harare, you will see that young musicians such as Sulumani Chimbetu and Peter Moyo are doing quite well.

This is because they have all the necessary support. This is what we want to see happening in Bulawayo as well,” she said.
