Africa Albida Tourism’s flagship establishment, Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, a fortnight ago won the exporter of the year for Matabeleland North region.

The accolade was awarded for the volume of foreign tourist business generated by the lodge compared to local business.

The ceremony was hosted by Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe in Victoria Falls.

Africa Albida Tourism chief executive Ross Kennedy said: “It really has been a great year for us and what a splendid way to end 2011.

“We are delighted to have been chosen as winners of this very prestigious award and even prouder to be representing our area in the upcoming semi-finals. Everyone from the region has been very supportive already so we’re crossing our fingers that we can make them proud in the next round.”

The Victoria Falls Hotel claimed first runner-up prize, and Wild Horizons was announced as second runner-up in the same category.

Other awards included Manager of the Year, which went to Trythings Mutyandasvika, general manager of Elephant Hills Hotel; Entrepreneur of the Year, won by Geoff Gover of Seven to Eleven Superette; Woman of the Year was awarded to Edith Mhlanga from Vic Falls Education Centre for her consistency in her duties over the last five years; Exporter (Agriculture) went to Spencer’s Creek in Vic Falls and New Business of the Year went to Comoil Lupane.

Over the 2011 period, Victoria Falls Safari Lodge also won the Best Safari Lodge in Zimbabwe Award and its two restaurants also claimed restaurant and creative menu awards.

Jonathon Hudson, general manager of Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, said: “Victoria Falls Safari Lodge carries the prestigious title of being Zimbabwe’s best safari lodge for 16 years running.

It’s the most popular among non-tented safari lodges in Zimbabwe and we intend to keep it there.

“It’s always great to be recognised for your efforts and everyone at the lodge has worked really hard this year to maintain our high standards and keep guests happy.

And if we continue to deliver on service excellence, the awards will no doubt keep coming.”
