The Zimbabwe Urban Council Workers’ Union (ZUCWU) Mutare Chapter is seeking the ouster of town clerk Obert Muzawazi accusing him of incompetence and failing to address workers’ welfare.
The union’s position is contained in a letter, copied to Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo, Manicaland governor Chris Mushohwe, provincial administrator Fungai Mbetsa and mayor Brian James among other stakeholders.
NewsDay is in possession of the letter dated December 7, 2011.
ZUCWU identified 11 issues they allege Muzawazi was found wanting in.
Part of the letter read: “City of Mutare workers and residents are as well speaking against the Town Clerk, basing on corrupt activities and failing to deliver — just to mention a few ‘failings’ to control councillors as an executive, unfair dismissal of workers, unnecessary tours, lack of respect and failing to pay medical aid and Cimas therefore critically ill workers are turned down.
“The worst part of the problem councillors are allowed to offer tenders especially notably in the case of Cllr Mwashita who was offered a tender (worth over) $600 000 and swindled above $300 000. Town clerk was supposed to have advised as the overall executive manager. May we, therefore, request our Hon Local Government Minister Dr Ignatius Chombo to replace (him) with a capable executive town clerk in order to counter-balance the political, social and economic situation prevailing within the city of Mutare.”
Mutare mayor Brian James refused to comment, saying he was in a meeting.
