Embattled MDC-T councillor Johannes Ngozo facing six counts of fraud and theft survived suspension by fellow city fathers until his case has been finalised by the courts.

Ngozo, who chairs the housing committee, is accused of corruptly abusing his position when he allegedly swindled desperate home seekers of over $10 000 in botched land sales.

During a tense full council meeting held recently, Queenly Chitopo wanted council to debate the eligibility of Ngozo to continue heading the housing committee which oversees the sale of stands, when he was in court over allegations of abusing the position.

Mayor Shadreck Tobaiwa stalled the debate when he ruled the motion could not be discussed since Ngozo’s matter was still before the courts.

“We cannot discuss issues that are pending before the courts. We will have to wait until the matter is finalised,” said Tobaiwa. MDC-T Mbizo district branch has since suspended Ngozo from the party pending outcome of the court case.

“We expected councilors to suspend Ngozo from council until his case is finalised. It does not show good governance to have someone facing allegations of corruption continue to hold an office he allegedly abused,” said MDC-T Mbizo branch chairman Adam Machisvo.
