A 27-year-old man from Harare’s Mbare suburb was last week arrested after he allegedly raped his 16-year-old sister and impregnated her as punishment for refusing to prepare him food.

The accused appeared in court last Friday facing rape charges.

It is the State’s case that on November 15, at around 6pm, the accused approached the complainant and demanded food from her.

He allegedly beat the teenager with clenched fists on the face accusing her of causing him to be chased away from home by their mother.

It is alleged the brother pushed his sister on to a sofa and raped her.

The complainant was so confused by the ordeal she failed to report the matter immediately as she feared no one would believe her.

After a month, she sent a text message to her sister-in-law, who is based in South Africa, leading to the accused’s arrest.

Regional magistrate Clever Tsikwa remanded him in custody to February 1 next year and advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

Nathaniel Chigoro prosecuted.
