Former Warriors defender Zvenyika Makonese is set for a return to the Absa Premiership in the New Year with Limpopo- based Black Leopards.

This is after Makonese, who spent the remainder of last season at his former club Shabanie Mine, impressed during a trial stint at Lidoda Duvha recently.

Speaking to Kick Off magazine, Leopard spokesperson Tendani Thidiela, confirmed the tough-tackling former Orlando Pirates defender will be registered with the club in January.

“He did well during his trials and will definitely be signed by us this season. He has gone back home, but will return to South Africa in January in time to register him when the transfer window re-opens,” said Thidiela.

The former Gaths Mine player briefly returned to the domestic league with his former club Shabanie Mine after Soweto giants Orlando Pirates did not extend his contract after its expiry on June 30.

Makonese left Shabanie Mine in 2004 for Santos where he spent five seasons before joining Pirates.

In 2006 after impressing with the Warriors at the Africa Cup of Nations, he was reported to be subject of interest from European clubs including Stoke City and several French clubs, but nothing came of it.

Makonese faces a tough challenge to transform the fortunes of Leopards who are second from bottom on the 16-team log with a measly 10 points from 15 matches.

Leopards, who under Sunday “Mhofu” Chidzambwa reached the Nedbank Final, also have the worst defence in the Absa Premiership, having conceded a massive 31 goals more than any team in the league.
