Bulawayo mayor Thaba Moyo yesterday donated goods worth $204 000 from his Christmas Cheer Fund to 39 organisations and food hampers to 4 200 families.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held at the Small City Hall in Bulawayo, Moyo said the fund had surpassed its target of $100 000.

The beneficiaries included organisations that work with vulnerable groups, churches and schools.

“The generous donations we received this year are a clear demonstration of the philanthropic spirit and kindheartedness that is synonymous with the people of Bulawayo,” he said.

“The corporate sector and the entire community of Bulawayo have demonstrated their commitment to giving, cheer and love during this special season.”

Moyo said it was the first time the fund has been able to support 39 charitable institutions with goods and groceries.

He said the families that received food hampers were identified through council’s housing and community services department.

Nathan Nhira, chairperson of the fund said: “Our job is to solicit for goods in council and church for the underprivileged in society once in a year. This is not about publicity, it is about service to the community.”
