A 31-year-old Epworth man who masqueraded as a police officer and raped a 15-year-old girl was yesterday slapped with a 15-year jail term.

Mavhuto Dinara had pleaded not guilty to the charge, but regional magistrate Memory Chigwaza found him guilty and sent him to jail.

Five years of the sentence were, however, suspended for five years on condition Dinara does not commit an offence of a similar nature.

In passing sentence, Chigwaza said Dinara tarnished the image of the police force by lying to the complainant that she was under arrest yet his intention was to lure and rape her.

“The accused took advantage of a young girl who was praying at a shrine. He had no respect whatsoever as he lured the complainant who was communicating with her Creator,” said Chigwaza.

Dinara, who is married with three children, approached the complainant on October 22 while she was praying with her young sister at Domboramwari Shrine and introduced himself as a police officer.

He told the two sisters they were under arrest for loitering. He then manhandled the complainant and told her to walk in front, saying he was taking her to Stopover Shopping Centre, to arrest other alleged prostitutes.

When they arrived at Jacha River, Dinara pulled the complainant into the bush and raped her.

The complainant’s younger sister rushed home and informed her mother who summoned neighbors and followed.

They caught up with Dinara, apprehended him and facilitated his arrest. Tinashe Kanyemba prosecuted.
