Hippo Valley men’s hockey club and Sunrise ladies’ team registered crucial wins on the third day of the Africa Hockey Federation (AHF) Africa Cup for Club Champions Competition currently underway in Lusaka, Zambia.

The AHF’s flagship competition started at the Olympic Youth Development Centre in Lusaka on Saturday with Zimbabwean clubs initially struggling to assert their dominance.

Sunrise ladies’ hockey team brightened their chances of booking a place in the final after edging hosts Lusaka Hockey Club 1-0 in Zambia yesterday. It was sweet victory for Sunrise, who had got their campaign off to a disappointing start with a 3-0 loss to defending champions Heartlands of Nigeria on Saturday.

Sunrise, Lusaka and Heartland are the only teams contesting in the women’s competition, where the top two teams after two rounds of action meet in the final on Saturday.

Hippo Valley’s men’s hockey team also recorded their first victory of the competition after a comprehensive 12-0 drubbing of Gentrix from Malawi yesterday to leave them with a slim chance of progressing to the latter stages of the competition.

Hippo got their campaign off to a losing start after going down 2-1 to Strathmore University from Kenya on the opening day of the competition on Saturday.
