GWANDA — A 20-year-old woman from Stanmore area recently dumped her newly-born baby in a pit latrine claiming the man who had impregnated her had denied responsibility.

This was heard by a Gwanda magistrate Gladmore Mushove on Friday during the appearance of Lindani Ndlovu.

Ndlovu pleaded guilty to infanticide and was remanded in custody to today for sentence.

The court heard that on September 22 Ndlovu, who was nine months pregnant, gave birth to a baby whose sex was not revealed in court papers.

She took the baby and threw it in a pit latrine. The matter came to light when a neighbour Penny Sibanda, noticed she was no longer pregnant.

He also noticed that her clothes had blood stains and when he entered the toilet he saw blood. Sibanda asked her what had happened to the pregnancy. He reported the matter to the police, leading to Ndlovu’s arrest.

The baby’s decomposing corpse was later retrieved. When asked in court why she dumped the baby, Ndlovu claimed she had no means to care for the baby after her boyfriend denied responsibility and fled from the village.
