The trial of a senior Zanu PF official, Robert Khumalo, facing charges of allegedly stealing two community water pumps failed to start on Thursday after the court granted him permission to attend the party’s conference in Bulawayo.

Khumalo (57) was excused after a request by his lawyer, Solomon Mguni.

“Being a member of the Matabeleland North provincial executive, his presence at the official opening is expected,” Mguni wrote to the courts.

“Find attached the party’s communication to the provinces. We accordingly ask for indulgence if your good office is so mindful.”

Khumalo is alleged to have sold two pumps belonging to the Jotsholo community to a Zipra veteran Buster Magwizi (64) and a safari operator Cristal Dube.

Magwizi claims Khumalo confided in him that he was selling the pumps to cover his daughter’s wedding costs, a charge the latter has denied.
