The United States Embassy is supporting participation of president of the Footballers’ Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ), Desmond Maringwa, and Mighty Warriors coach, Rosemary Mugadza, at the Beyond Sport Summit which started yesterday in Cape Town, South Africa. The event ends tomorrow.

Beyond Sport is a global initiative that seeks to celebrate and support any organisation or individual working to drive positive social change through sport.

“This is a great opportunity to further capacity building in FUZ, our long-term partner in the fight against HIV and Aids.

It’s exciting and overdue for us to include Zimbabwe’s amazing women players as well. We hope this experience will help these two Zimbabwe football leaders to network with and learn from their peers in others countries,” said SharonHudson-Dean, US embassy spokesperson in a statement.

The US embassy, through the US President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief, earlier this year kicked off a long-term HIV prevention partnership with FUZ and Population Services International—Zimbabwe.

FUZ members have undergone public HIV tests with US Ambassador Charles Ray to mark World Aids Day since 2010.

Last Thursday, four members of the footballers’ union led by FUZ deputy president Hebert Dick went for public HIV tests with the American envoy at Madlodlo Beer Garden in Bulawayo in events to mark World Aids Day.

According to Summit organisers, over 1 000 people will gather in Cape Town for the summit, including 300 executives from some of the world’s top companies such as Sony, Standard Chartered, Virgin Atlantic, Time Inc, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Adidas, Barclays, Fifa, the NBA, Nascar, the Australian Football League, the Qatar Foundation and Unicef.

At the event, winners of the Beyond Sport Awards — among them Chelsea Football Club’s Didier Drogba — will be announced. 35 projects have been shortlisted for awards from 18 countries and 22 different sports.
