Top-ranked Zimbabwe Under-18 players Innocent Mhere and Pauline Chawafambira lived up to expectations at the weekend as they won the Manicaland Tennis Association Junior Open tournament in Mutare.

Both players swiftly turned their focus to the impending battle at the Zimbabwe Open scheduled for next week in Harare.

Mhere beat old rival Takudzwa Muswere 6-3, 6-2 while Chawafambira outclassed Lattifah Yasini 6-2, 6-2 in the girls’ finals.

Mhere said it was a good preparatory tournament for the Zimbabwe Open.

“The three-day tournament was good for me as I am getting ready for the Zimbabwe Open where l am expecting a tough challenge.”

Chawafambira said: “It was not really tough for me, but it was good as I prepared for the Zim Open next week.”

Tennis Zimbabwe president Anne Martin, who graced the tournament, said she was happy with the competition because it would help players achieve their dreams.

“l am very happy because these youngsters need to play a lot of games so they achieve these goals and also to nurture good young players for our country,” she said.
