The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) yesterday said government must maintain the Aids levy, but improve transparency in the way the fund is handled.

In a speech to mark World Aids Day, ZCTU president George Nkiwane said at the moment the levy was not assisting the intended beneficiaries.

“The Aids levy seems not to be benefiting the ordinary worker because the worker is failing to get ARV’s (anti-retroviral treatment) due to its high cost,” he said.

“Workers deserve to know how these funds are used because it is them who give the government this money through the Aids levy.”

Speaking at the same occasion, ZCTU regional chairman Reason Ngwenya said workers deserved to know how money from the levy was being spent because they contributed towards the fund.

“We do not want it to be removed, but just want its transparency so that we help the poor people among us who are suffering from this disease,” he said.
