The GC Tennis Centre Singles League tournament wraps up this weekend at the Bulawayo Athletic Club (BAC) with Nkanyiso Sibanda and Thesly Mufunda hot favourites to win the competition.

Sibanda takes on Stephen Chimwanza while Mufunda clashes with Gavin Magenga in the semi-finals on Saturday before the finals which will also be played in the afternoon.

It has been hectic weekends for the singles tournament since the end of October, but the four managed to finally pull through to the semi-finals after a round-robin stage that involved three groups.

Sibanda beat Raggs Joelson 6-2, 6-1 in the quarter-finals last weekend to progress to the semis.

Raggs, who had fallen away in the play-offs after the round-robin games, was slotted in for the quarter-finals to replace Bryn Langley, who had travelled to Burundi for the ITF East and Central Africa Under-18 Juniors Circuit.

Mufunda beat GC Tennis Centre colleague Adam Joelson 6-1, 6-3 in the other quarter-final.

Magenga had a tough game last week, but edged Rennie Chikunichawa 6-3, 7-6 to cruise to the semi-final while Chimwanza trounced Keletso Malane 6-3, 6-2.

After the GC Tennis Centre Singles League is over, Mufunda, Sibanda, Chimwanza, Magenga, Ronald Munzvengwa and Kudakwashe Maoche will not rest as they prepare for the Zim Open to be hosted in Harare from December 13-15.

Mufunda, who is also the Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Tennis Board development officer, said the GC Tennis Centre Singles League competition had come in handy as it gave them good preparation for the upcoming Zim Open.

All the six participated in the GC Tennis Centre tournament.
