Former Mthwakazi Liberation Front (MLF) secretary-general, John Gazi, is in jail serving a 10-month jail term for fraud, it has emerged.

Gazi, who together with Paul Siwela and Charles Thomas are being jointly charged for allegedly plotting to topple the government, appeared in court dressed in prison garb yesterday, prompting Bulawayo magistrate Tawanda Muchemwa to ask why the accused was dressed like that.

Gazi told the court he was already doing time after the High Court in October turned down his appeal against conviction and sentence over a fraud case involving a city building.

Gazi resigned from his post in the MLF recently and was immediately replaced by Siwela, who had previously served as the party’s economic adviser.

The trio, who have been on remand since March, had their treason case remanded to December 19.

They are on $2 000 bail each, granted by Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Nicholas Ndou on March 24.

They face charges of distributing flyers allegedly urging members of the public and security forces to turn against the government and join Mthwakazi Republic.

The trio is being represented by Sindiso Shepherd Mazibisa, Matshobana Ncube, Kucaca Phulu, Robert Ndlovu led by Advocate Lucas Nkomo while Martha Cheda represents the State.
