Blood bank employee exposes dispatch of tainted blood

A procurement manager at the National Blood Services of Zimbabwe (NBSZ) has accused the blood bank board of allegedly supplying untested blood to hospitals, thereby compromising recipients’ lives.

The damning exposé is contained in an urgent application filed at the Labour Court by NBSZ’s Emmanuel Masvikeni in which he is challenging a proposed disciplinary hearing against him for alleged misconduct.

“I reported against the chief executive officer (CEO) that some of the blood that was banked was health risk blood since it is not being tested in terms of procedure,” said Masvikeni.

“I am a blood procurement officer. If I believe that the blood that is being banked is a health risk. Should I be victimised for such? No,” reads part of Masvikeni’s founding affidavit.

Masvikeni claims disciplinary procedures which have been called against him were meant to victimise him for the whistleblowing that he did against the organisation’s CEO whom he accused of corruption and maladministration.

“I believe that the chief executive officer wants to dismiss me so that he can silence me and (take) revenge (against) me for reporting the issue of maladministration that I had raised,” said Masvikeni.

He wants the NBSZ to suspend the disciplinary hearing.

Masvikeni says that although the CEO appointed a three-member panel of the human resources and the finance committees to investigate the allegations he had raised against certain members of the organisation, the results of the probe had not been made public.
