GWANDA – A-25-year-old man from Gwanda, who beat up his wife when she followed him to his new love nest where he was co-habiting with another woman, told court he had walked out of her because of infidelity.

The court heard Buthani Nyoni and Bonani Mpofu were formally married and lived together at Spitzkop in Gwanda before the former walked out of the marriage. He proceeded to co-habit with another woman in the same neighbourhood.

It is the State case that on November 12 at around 11pm, Mpofu stormed into the house where her husband was now staying to inquire about the documents of a housing stand the couple had jointly bought in the town.

A misunderstanding broke out after Nyoni allegedly failed to produce the documents, resulting in a scuffle.

In the ensuing melee, Nyoni allegedly struck her with a knobkerrie before punching her all over. Mpofu later reported the matter to the police, leading to Nyoni’s arrest.

Nyoni denied the assault charge when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate Jimmy Ntonga recently. In his defence, Nyoni told the court the claims by his wife were lies and malicious.

He said he had left their home because Mpofu was tormenting him by having extra-marital affairs. Nyoni claimed he never assaulted Mpofu.

But, Mpofu denied the allegations of infidelity. She said she followed her husband to try and plead with him to come back home, but got beaten up instead.

The case was remanded to November 28 for judgment.

Jefta Nyikadzinashe is prosecuting.
