A Chitungwiza Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer, Xavier Tauyanago, has been arrested for allegedly robbing Enock Nyamutaka of $460 after picking him up for questioning.
The robbery is said to have occurred at Chitungwiza Police Station within the CID section where Nyamutaka was allegedly severely beaten by the police officer.
It is alleged Tauyanago arrested Nyamutaka on August 21, together with a blind man, identified only as Friday, whom he claimed had been on the run and was on the police wanted list.
It is alleged on the day in question, Tauyanago was in the company of other officers when they went to a bar in Chitungwiza, tracking down Friday whom they later spotted sitting at the same table with Nyamutaka.
When Tauyanago started talking to Friday, he failed to recognise him because of his blindness and upon witnessing the breakdown in communication, Nyamutaka allegedly interjected and requested Tauyanago to identify himself to Friday.
Nyamutaka’s interjection is said to have offended Tauyanago, who then dragged Nyamutaka outside the bar where he allegedly assaulted him with open hands and fists.
It is alleged Tauyanago then forcibly ordered Nyamutaka and Friday into his vehicle and drove them to Chitungwiza Police Station CID section.
While there, Tauyanago allegedly handcuffed Nyamutaka and assaulted him under his feet, knees and chest using a baton stick resulting in him sustaining injuries.
During the alleged beating, Tauyanago is alleged to have searched Nyamutaka and stole cash from him.
It is alleged while all this was happening Friday, the alleged fugitive, was present, but nothing was done to him.
Nyamutaka was later referred to Chitungwiza General Hospital by other police officers for treatment.
Tauyanago was not asked to plead when he appeared before Chitungwiza provincial magistrate Olivia Mariga last week, facing a robbery charge.
He was remanded to next Tuesday for trial on $50 bail.
