The late Vice-President (VP) Joseph Msika’s widow Maria (83) is reportedly ill and has been hospitalised at St Anne’s Hospital since Friday.

It is understood the wheelchair-bound Maria is admitted in the executive ward on the first floor of the private health facility where she is being looked after by two aides. Hospital staff, however, declined to disclose the nature of her illness.

Zanu PF spokesperson Rugare Gumbo would not comment saying he was busy while party chairperson Simon Khaya Moyo indicated he was not aware of the illness.

Sikhanyiso Ndlovu, a Zanu PF politburo member, declined to comment referring all questions to the Msika family.

Strenuous efforts to contact the family were fruitless by the time of going to print.

However, impeccable sources at the hospital said Msika’s widow was admitted between 5pm and 6pm on Friday. In 2009, President Robert Mugabe revealed that VP Msika’s widow, was “also unwell” following the death of her husband.

Last year, Msika’s widow received a donation of an electric wheelchair during her 82nd birthday by Vice-Presidents John Nkomo and Joice Mujuru after her health deteriorated.

Maria married the late Vice- President in 1946 and stood by him during and after the liberation struggle until his death on August 4 2009 at the age of 85.
