A 23-year-old MDC-T activist, Bonface Kudakwashe Muchemwa of Zengeza 1, Chitungwiza, has been arrested following political violence that rocked the town and led to cancellation of an MDC-T rally.

Muchemwa was picked up by police last Sunday and charged with allegedly assaulting a Zanu PF supporter Ever Tatenda Mushonga. It is alleged Muchemwa was in the company of other MDC-T youths when they indiscriminately used logs and iron bars to attack Zanu PF youths.

Muchemwa is alleged to have been spotted by eyewitnesses attacking Mushonga using an iron bar, and as a result, Mushonga is said to have sustained injuries on his back and right arm.

According to court papers, Mushonga is said to be undergoing treatment at South Medical Hospital in Chitungwiza.

Muchemwa was not asked to plead when he appeared before Chitungwiza provincial magistrate Olivia Mariga facing an assault charge.

He was remanded in custody after the State opposed bail saying political violence was on the increase and that elections were around the corner.

The magistrate concurred and remanded Muchemwa to November 21.

His lawyer, Gift Mtisi, said he would approach the High Court to appeal against the magistrates’ ruling.
