Kunonga rubbishes murder accusations

Excommunicated Anglican Church Bishop Nolbert Kunonga has denied allegations his followers were responsible for murdering a church member early this year and distanced his faction from the violence rocking the country.

He further rubbished a dossier, submitted to President Robert Mugabe last month by the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, highlighting alleged abuses members of the Church of the Province of Central Africa were going through at his hands.

The dossier also alleges the police had sided with Kunonga to unleash violence.

“It boggles the mind why Zimbabwean bishops would wait for so long to apprise their own President of the alleged abuse and persecution.

Surely, why would they watch Bishop Kunonga killing, harassing and persecuting people whilst waiting for Rowan Williams to come and confront their own President over the abuse of their own church people? Why would they watch the Zimbabwe Republic Police harass and persecute their priests and congregations?” Kunonga queried.

“Why would I murder (Jessica Mandeya) someone who has no influence and who is of no danger to my leadership?

We have no women clergy, so why would I have her killed? Why would I spare (Sebastian) Bakare and (Chad) Gandiya? If they have the information, why don’t they give it to the police so that they can bring the murderer to book?”

Kunonga accused his rivals of reporting to President Mugabe saying the President was not an Anglican bishop. “President Mugabe is not a bishop, he is not an Anglican and he has nothing to do with the Anglican Church.

Why would they go to the President? In essence they are asking the President to violate the rule of law which they preach so much when white interests are concerned.”

The police have been accused of siding with Kunonga, a self-confessed Zanu PF supporter.
