A Harare teenage girl was on Saturday allegedly raped in a commuter omnibus, in full view of five other women.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau yesterday confirmed the incident that took place in the kombi after the victim boarded the commuter omnibus from the city centre to Highfield at around 8am.

“Along the way, the driver asked one of the females, who was sitting in front to drive and he jumped to the back of the vehicle where he started fondling the complainant’s breasts before raping her once,” said Sabau, adding none of the females came to the victim’s rescue.

Sabau said the gang dumped their victim at a secluded place and sped off. The girl went to make a report at Southerton Police Station. He blasted women who connived with rapists, saying the act was inhuman.

“A woman feels very secure when she sees other women in a commuter omnibus.

“But, now this is disturbing that a 17-year-old is raped whilst other women are looking. It is really sad and worrying,” he said.
