The Zimbabwe Sevens rugby team had to settle for second best in the Plate competition of the Safaricom Sevens tournament in Kenya when they lost 29-12 to New Zealand Sevens champions Auckland Vikings in the final at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

The Cheetahs had been relegated to the second-tier competition after they were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Main Cup following a 34-5 drubbing by the eventual winners Samoa.

The Zimbabwean squad, missing the services of some of their regular players, was just no match for the 2009/2010 IRB World Sevens Series champions.

Samoa would go on to win the coveted title after beating Samurai 31-12 in what was dubbed the “Battle of the South Pacific Islanders” final.
