KARIBA — A 28-year-old man, Edwin Hungwe, who faces charges of fatally assaulting his sister’s son to death for soiling his pants, appeared in court yesterday and was remanded in custody to November 10.

The accused is alleged to have fatally assaulted his nephew on October 3 for soiling his trousers.

The incident occurred at Delta village, Nyamakate in Makuti, Kariba district, Mashonaland West Province.

Hungwe was staying with his nephew Panashe Chaparadza following the boy’s mother’s relocation to South Africa where she was working.

On the fateful day at around 1700hrs, the accused arrived home from Nyamakate BH1 suburb and was informed by his wife Rhoda Chinhamo (23) the now-deceased toddler had messed his clothes with faeces.

The accused allegedly took a leather belt and assaulted the boy several times all over the body resulting in him sustaining multiple injuries. After the assault the family retired to bed.

The boy died around 0500hrs the following day as a result of the injuries, the court heard.

The matter was reported to Makuti Police Station, leading to Hungwe’s arrest. The deceased’s body was taken to Kariba District Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.

Magistrate Felix Chauromwe presided over the matter while Ziyaduma Gaudzo prosecuted.
