Dozens of primary school- children have been left exposed to the ravages of the weather after a hailstorm destroyed schools in Zaka, Chiredzi and Mwenezi.

Last Thursday and on Saturday, Danda and Chimedza Primary schools, as well as Zivazvose Secondary School had their roofs blown off.

Provincial education director Clara Dube confirmed the incident and said more schools in Mwenezi and Chiredzi had been affected.

“It is true. The damage is not only limited to Zaka, but extends to Chiredzi, Chivi and Mwenezi,” she said. She said Masvingo did not have any funding to help the schools, but appealed to parents to help rebuild. “We have sought the assistance of head office. As a province, we do not have a fund to assist the schools. We are asking parents to do something about it,” she said.

The hailstorm destroyed shops at Ndanga and Mupunga business centres.

Amon Felix Mushangwe, a businessman at Ndanga, said the roof of his shop was blown off.

“As I am speaking, I lost not only my roof, but stock due to the storm. I can estimate damage to be at $5 000. I do not know where to start from now,” said Mushangwe.

An RCZ church building at Chimedza business centre also had its roof blown off.

Mushangwe said as a result of the storm, the area has gone for close to a week without electricity because power pylons had been uprooted.
