A consortium of three large-scale commercial farmers in the Shangani area of Matabeleland South has come to the rescue of newly-resettled farmers with provision of farming inputs.

John Goddard, owner of Pezulu Farm and leader of the consortium, said they formed the Shangani Farmers’ Co-operative Company after realising that most of the resettled farmers could not acquire enough inputs this farming season.

Other members of the consortium are Black Water and Debsham farms.

“We have started a pilot project for the 2011-2012 farming season targeting the new A1 and A2 farmers,” Goddard said.

“We firstly assess their viability and visibility status before we can assist them. We will start distribution of seeds, chemicals and fertilisers in efforts to improve their productivity.”

He said the major problem the new farmers encountered was the lack of inputs.

“So far we have registered about 40 new farmers in the area and the distribution of inputs starts next week (this week),” he said.

Ndabezinhle Nhlabane Ndlovu of Black Water farm, also Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers’ Union chairman for the area, said their co-operative is targeting new farmers who are paid up members of the union.
