President Robert Mugabe’s daughter, Bona, yesterday graduated with a degree in accounting at the City University in Hong Kong.
Bona (23) is President Mugabe and First Lady Grace’s first born and she along with her “best friend”, Nyaradzo Khimbini, were the first Zimbabwean graduates at the university, ZBC reported.
The First Family attended the graduation ceremony together with Foreign Affairs minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi and Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to China Frederick Shava, among other officials.
ZBC said President Mugabe “praised his daughter for her determination to succeed”, saying she had done the family proud. He also lauded the Hong Kong authorities “for protecting Bona from harassment by British journalists”.
The veteran ruler himself has read for and obtained seven degrees, many of them acquired while in prison during the liberation war.
He reportedly told the City University authorities that Zimbabwe was willing to bring more students to the institution. President Mugabe has been frequenting the Far East and had reportedly used the trips to visit Bona in Hong Kong.
But there has been speculation that the 87-year-old leader has used the trips to receive treatment for prostate cancer in Singapore.
The First Family is barred from travelling to Western countries after the European Union and the United States imposed sanctions on Zanu PF’s top leadership over alleged human rights violations.
