The Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) has embarked on a vigorous staff recruitment drive, targeting experienced doctorate holders at foreign universities.

Speaking at CUT’s seventh graduation ceremony on Saturday, Vice-Chancellor Professor David Simbi reiterated the need for human capital development if the institution was to satisfy its mandate to harness technological innovation and scientific research.

Simbi said CUT now boasted of 18 lecturers who were PhD holders with three of them being professors.

“The human capital base at this university is slowly transforming. At last year’s graduation we had only two PhD holders including the Chancellor (President Robert Mugabe) and his vice,” said Simbi.

Five of the 18 are female, while one was lured from a Rwandan college.

Simbi underscored the institution’s drive to create knowledge hubs to foster what he termed “brain circulation”.

Collaboratively supervised doctor and master of philosophy degrees would be introduced in conjunction with South African, Malawian and Zambian universities, said Simbi.

President Mugabe, who was visibly unwell as evidenced by his unsteady gait as the academic procession took to the podium, capped a total of 318 graduands drawn from four faculties.

The students graduated with bachelors, honours and masters degrees as well as diplomas.
