The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) has appointed Anna Mguni as its new chief executive officer.

The appointment is with effect from November 1. Mguni has served on the ZOC board for the past five years. She takes over from Stanley Mutoya who resigned from the same position to take up a new role as general manager of the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa Zone VI in Botswana.

Mutoya, who joined ZOC in May 2006 as the operations and business development manager before his elevation to the general manager and later chief executive, replaces fellow Zimbabwean Charles Dzimba who is retiring at the end of the year.

Prior to her recent appointment as the ZOC chief executive, Mguni — a former physical education teacher and television sports news presenter who has interests in rugby, tennis and basketball — was the chairperson for the technical and development commission on the ZOC executive board.

Mguni becomes the first woman to serve as ZOC CEO marking another milestone in the organization’s capacity development programme. She once played for Varsity Leopards basketball club before she was selected for the Zimbabwe squad for the 1995 All-Africa Games and subsequently became involved in sports administration.

She went on to take the position of secretary-general of the Basketball Union Zimbabwe before joining ZOC as committee operations manager in April 2004 to 2006.

She chaired the technical and development commission which has oversight in facilitating the preparation and participation of Athletes for the Olympic Games as well as other development programmes. Admire Masenda, the ZOC president, confirmed the developments in an interview with NewsDay Sport yesterday.

Masenda said the executive board has put top on its list the search for a new chief executive to assume duty as they had considered seriously the aspect of continuity, taking into consideration the London 2012 Games scheduled for July next year. Masenda said in a statement:

“After having received Stanley Mutoya’s resignation, the ZOC board deliberated over the options on how best to fill the post and opted to head hunt.

“Anna Mguni was recommended for the post and underwent an interviewing process in which she excelled.”

He also expressed confidence in Mguni stating she was not new to Olympic family and therefore would be able to cope with the tasks before her especially as the London 2012 Olympic Games approach.
