Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) has made two senior editorial appointments at the country’s leading independent daily, NewsDay, effective November 1.
Tangai Chipangura, who was Assistant Editor of the paper, has been promoted to Deputy Editor.
Chipangura joined AMH in December 2009 making part of the NewsDay core team and the paper’s founding News Editor at its inception in June 2010. He was promoted to Assistant Editor in March 2011, a position he held until his latest appointment.
Chipangura has 22 years’ experience in journalism and has held various senior positions in several media organisations. He was Senior Reporter for The Chronicle in 1990 before joining Parade Magazine as a Senior Staff Writer between 1991 and 2002.
In 2002, Chipangura was appointed Editor of Moto Magazine, a position he held for five years before leaving to join South Africa-based Media24 Africa as the Zimbabwe Correspondent. A winner of several media awards, Chipangura is a holder of a Mass Communication Diploma and a Certificate in Print Media Management, among numerous media qualifications.
Kholwani Nyathi has been appointed Assistant Editor of NewsDay. Until his appointment, he was News Editor of The Standard, NewsDay’s sister paper.
Nyathi started his journalism at the Daily News in 2000 when he was among students from the Harare Polytechnic who were recruited to help the then newly established publication to cover the June parliamentary elections.
He did his internship at the now defunct Bulawayo-based Dispatch, which was part of Associated Newspapers of Zimbabwe, publishers of the Daily News and the Daily News on Sunday.

Upon graduating from the Harare Polytechnic in 2001, Nyathi briefly worked as a sports correspondent for Zimpapers’ Sunday News.
He went on to work for the Mirror newspaper in Botswana as a senior reporter before returning home in mid 2003 to join The Chronicle as a Senior Reporter.
Nyathi left The Chronicle in December 2006 where he had been promoted to Chief Reporter to join The Standard as its Bulawayo Bureau Chief. In 2008, he was promoted to News Editor of that Sunday paper, a position he held until his appointment to NewsDay.
He has won the Business Reporter and Reproductive Health Reporter awards from the Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa-Botswana) and was the inaugural winner of the Misa-Zimbabwe Gender Reporter Award.
Nyathi studied journalism at the Harare Polytechnic and National University of Science and Technology. AMH has also made another senior appointment in its information technology department where Mqabuko Ntuli, who was Information Technology Support Technician, has been promoted to the post of Group Network Administrator.
Ntuli is a Computer Engineer who has worked for several companies including some in Botswana in various capacities. He joined AMH in May 2010. He holds a City and Guilds Engineer T5 certificate. AMH Editor-in-Chief Vincent Kahiya said of the appointments: “This is a show of confidence in our staff that deserve these promotions by virtue of their hard work.
“It will help us consolidate our position as the most read daily paper in the country. Ntuli’s experience is invaluable as he offers key support to the newsroom.”
