Junior managers from the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) were chucked out of Parliament after the Zesa subsidiary’s managing director Noah Gwariro failed to turn up to answer questions from MPs.

Gwariro had been summoned to appear before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Energy, chaired by Guruve South MP Edward Chindori-Chininga. Instead, he sent his finance director Hubert Chiwara and projects general manager Washington Mareya to represent him.

The Mines and Energy committee could not take it and ordered out the two managers, reminding them Parliament should be taken seriously.

“We have serious issues about electricity to discuss here and we cannot have a second generation meeting here. When you are asked to appear before Parliament, it is not a place where you delegate and send different people,” said Chindori-Chininga.

“If you are summoned to appear before a court, do you send your brother to represent you? These people should take Parliament seriously,” chipped in Chiredzi West MP Moses Mare.

The committee had invited the ZPC managing director to give oral evidence on electricity shortages in the country.

Chindori-Chininga told the two junior managers when Parliament invited the managing director, they wanted him specifically and not anyone else.

“We are, therefore, dismissing you. You have also wasted our time and resources because everything we do here is a national thing that must be taken seriously,” said Chindori-Chininga.

In their defence, the two managers said their boss had written to the Clerk of Parliament on October 26, to advise that he would not be able to appear before the committee to give oral evidence, but would send the two managers to stand in his stead.

Recently, lawmakers from different committees threw out ministers and senior public officials for failing to respect Parliament regulations.

Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Joseph Made was recently chucked out of a Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Agriculture hearing after failing to give adequate information on the operations of the Agricultural Rural Development Authority.

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Gideon Gono was also ejected from a Budget, Finance and Investment Promotion Portfolio Committee hearing for failing to appear with all members of the of the central bank board.
