Jamaican conscious reggae stars Cocoa Tea and Fantan Mojah kept thousands of fans on their feet on Saturday evening during the Bulawayo edition of the Lion Lager Summer Beer Festival held at Hartsfield in Bulawayo.

Cocoa Tea and Fantan Mojah were the main attractions at the gig which also featured a star-studded local line-up including Winky D, Mic Inity, Eyahra Mathazia, Jeys Marabini, Chase Skuza and the Kozekulunge Band.

Crowds started trickling into the grounds at 4pm to witness the Jamaicans performing for their first time on African soil. The show kicked off in the afternoon with local DJs playing club hits.

The real action began when Bulawayo’s top five DJs, Gunz, Mzoe, Kead Wikead, Slammer and Kimble Rogers clashed on the decks for in the DJs’ battle. The DJs did not disappoint as they showed their remarkable skills and left revellers crying for more.

Rogers, a former radio DJ also known as Double KK, came out tops and walked away with the Lion Lager Trophy and $200. DJ Mzoe took second position and was awarded with $100 as well as a trophy for his efforts.

Marabini and the Kozekulunge Band put on a top-class performance with fans singing and dancing along to his tunes. Winky D, Mic Inity staged solid performances with their live bands and gained popularity in Bulawayo. Winky D’s first ninja girl, Lipsy also thrilled the crowds when she performed the track Taitirana with Winky D.

When Cocoa Tea got onto stage the crowd swelled, with his fans singing along to his string of conscious reggae hits. Backed by an equally talented group — Jah Band — Cocoa Tea would occasionally chant “Jah!” and the fans chanted back.

Eyahra also serenaded the audience with some more mellow reggae songs. Mojah who was the closing act gave punters a good run for their money with his versatile) tunes.

Meanwhile, Mojah, who was in Africa for the first time, has described Zimbabwe as his second home.

“I would like to give thanks and blessing to the people of Zimbabwe for welcoming us with warm hearts and supporting reggae music. I enjoyed my stay in Zimbabwe as it is my second home and I am willing to come back if given another opportunity,” he said.

He added that he liked Mic Inity and Winky D’s performances saying the two artists had so much potential.

“I wouldn’t mind working with Winky D and MIC Inity as they are powerful artists with great potential. Big up Winky D and MIC Inity,” he said.
