GWERU — Three teenage rape suspects from Mkoba suburb in Gweru admitted having sex with the complainant, but told the court they were unaware she was a minor.

The three — whose identity cannot be disclosed on legal grounds — told Gweru magistrate Meo Robwe the complainant, aged 14 — had consented to having sex with them on several occasions.

The State alleged the minor was sexually abused by the accused on several occasions between February and March this year.

The matter only came to light on March 9 after the complainant’s uncle quizzed her on where she had spent the day, whereupon she divulged one of the suspects had taken her to his parents’ apartment in the same suburb and abused her.

She also allegedly gave him details of other suspects who had slept with her.

The uncle reported the matter to police, leading to the suspects’ arrest. The complainant was examined at Gweru District health offices and a medical report revealed she was sexually abused. Yeukai Mugumba prosecuted.
