Mbare vendor Clarence Munemo allegedly swindled two Harare businesspersons of $25 267 in a fruit and vegetable deal.

Munemo (30) who is self-employed at Mbare wholesale market was contracted by the director of Consuflex Marketing, Grace Dawanyi, and Facade Trading manager, Rutsito Ngonidzashe, to sell farm produce on their behalf.

It is alleged between the period of July and August this year, Munemo was tasked to buy and supply potatoes, onions and apples to supermarkets selling vegetables in Harare and to surrender the proceeds to Dawanyi and Ngonidzashe.

Munemo was allegedly supposed to supply the fruit and vegetables to Spar Joina, Servo Foods and Interfresh Foods.

However, after being given $2 231 by Dawanyi to buy the vegetables, Munemo is alleged to have converted the money to his personal use.

The State alleges Munemo received 85 pockets of potatoes, 30 tonnes of onions and 56 tonnes of apples from Dawanyi and Ngonidzashe for sale to the outlets and after selling the goods he allegedly stole $23 036. It was not made clear in the State papers how the two complainants reported the matter leading to Munemo’s arrest, but he appeared before Harare magistrate Sandra Mupindu on Tuesday facing two counts of theft of trust property.

Munemo was not asked to plead and was remanded to October 31 on $100 bail for trial.

As part of his bail conditions, he was ordered not to interfere with witnesses and to report to Mbare Police Station every Friday.
