FC Platinum Football Club midfielder Mthulisi Maphosa landed himself in hot soup for allegedly ripping open a Mpopoma man’s stomach following an altercation in Bulawayo on Sunday.

The man, Isaac Mazambane, was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital where his condition was reportedly stable yesterday.

Narrating his ordeal from his hospital bed yesterday, Mazambane said the former Warriors, Zimbabwe Saints and Monomotapa midfielder ripped open his left lower abdomen after he intervened in a brawl involving the player and an old man.

Mazambane said: “We were watching a football match at Congo Bar when he (Maphosa) arrived and parked his motor vehicle behind us. It was around 12 noon.

He alighted from the car and asked if we were not aware there was a car coming. He started assaulting the old man who was nearby and I intervened asking why he was doing that to an elderly person. That is when he turned around and stabbed me.”

Maphosa reportedly handed himself to police yesterday after he heard they were looking for him.

Yesterday, Maphosa, who had a stint with Democratic Republic of Congo’s TP Mazembe, professed ignorance of the incident.

Instead, he claimed he went to the police station after he heard they were looking for him.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo told NewsDay: “We are investigating a stabbing incident that occurred in Mpopoma on the 9th of October.”

FC Platinum secretary-general Phil Muvengwa confirmed the incident, but said they were still investigating.

“I hope it’s a minor thing and I think the coach (Rahman Gumbo) is there in Bulawayo and will be coming tomorrow (today) to tell us what happened,” Muvengwa said.
